How Mile Minder works

Journey fuel cost depends on three main inputs: distance, vehicle fuel economy and the price of fuel. Bringing them together makes it easier to compare routes, plan a trip budget or estimate a fair contribution when costs are shared.

The calculation or process

Mile Minder converts the journey distance and efficiency figure into an estimated fuel quantity, then multiplies that amount by the fuel price. Where supported, unit conversions bridge common UK measures such as miles per gallon and litres.

Understanding the result

Real fuel use can differ from the estimate because speed, traffic, temperature, tyre pressure, payload and driving style all affect consumption. Treat the result as planning information rather than a guaranteed pump total.

Worked example

If a car is less efficient in stop-start traffic than on a motorway, the same 100-mile distance can cost more in urban conditions. Using a realistic recent economy figure gives a better estimate than the manufacturer's headline figure.

Practical tips

  • Use your own recent average fuel economy where available.
  • Include the return journey if the distance entered is one-way.
  • Remember that tolls, parking and wear are separate from fuel cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why does actual fuel spend differ from the estimate?

Fuel economy changes with conditions, and filling a tank does not measure one journey in isolation unless carefully tracked.

Is MPG the same in the UK and US?

No. UK imperial gallons are larger than US gallons, so the same MPG number does not represent the same fuel consumption.

Should I include detours?

Yes. Use the distance you realistically expect to drive rather than only the straight-line or advertised route length.
